Privacy Policy

This site is run by me, Mark Anderson, trading as ICT Evangelist, based in the United Kingdom. I take data protection seriously, not least because helping schools get it right is part of what I do for a living. This page explains what information this site collects, why, and what your rights are.

The short version

I collect as little as possible. No advertising, no selling data, no tracking you across the web. Analytics only runs if you say yes to it, and everything else is the minimum needed to make the site work and to reply when you contact me.

What I collect and why

Analytics. I use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used, which pages get read and where visitors come from, so I can make it better. It only runs if you accept it in the cookie banner, IP addresses are anonymised, the data is not used for advertising, and I’ve switched off Google’s ability to use it for its other products. You can change your mind at any time via the Manage Consent tab on the site. Analytics data is retained for up to 14 months.

Cookies. The site uses a small number of cookies, and non-essential ones only load with your consent. The full, always-current list of what’s used and why lives on the Cookie Policy page.

Contact forms. If you use a contact form, I get the name, email address and message you provide, and I use them to reply to you. That’s it. Nothing goes on a marketing list, and I keep enquiries only as long as I need them to deal with your message and any follow-up.

Blog subscriptions. If you subscribe to get my posts by email, your email address is held by Automattic (the company behind WordPress.com and Jetpack), which delivers those emails on my behalf. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing removes you.

Comments. If you leave a comment, the site stores the name, email and content you submit, along with your IP address, which is used for spam detection through Akismet. If you have a Gravatar attached to your email address, your profile picture may show alongside your comment.

Embedded content. Some posts embed content from other sites, like YouTube videos. Those embeds can set their own cookies and collect data as if you’d visited that site directly, which is why they’re blocked until you consent. Where possible I use privacy-friendly embed settings.

Hosting and logs. The site is hosted in the UK by 34SP.com, whose servers keep standard access logs (IP addresses, pages requested, timestamps) for security and troubleshooting, as almost every website does.

What I don’t do

No advertising cookies. No tracking pixels for marketing. No selling or renting your data to anyone. No profiling. The fonts on this site are served from my own server, not Google’s, so even your font requests stay here.

Lawful bases

Where I ask for consent (analytics, non-essential cookies, subscriptions), consent is the basis, and you can withdraw it as easily as you gave it. Replying to enquiries and keeping the site secure rely on legitimate interests. Nothing here involves special category data, and this site is aimed at education professionals, not at children.

Who processes data on my behalf

A small number of companies process data for me: Google (analytics, only with your consent), Automattic (email subscriptions, spam filtering), and 34SP.com (UK hosting). Some of these providers are based in the United States; where data leaves the UK it’s covered by the UK’s international data transfer safeguards.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you can ask me for a copy of the personal data I hold about you, ask me to correct it, ask me to delete it, object to or restrict how it’s used, and withdraw any consent you’ve given. Email mark@ictevangelist.com and I’ll respond within a month.

If you’re not happy with how I’ve handled your data, you have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113. I’d appreciate the chance to sort it out first, but that’s your right regardless.

Changes

If what this site collects changes, this page changes with it, and the date at the top tells you when it was last reviewed.
