Day 14 of the 2025 Appvent Calendar

By December 14, 2025No Comments

As Artificial Intelligence becomes more present in the lives of young people, one of the greatest challenges schools face is helping pupils understand it well. Not just what it does, but how it works, how it affects their lives and how they can engage with it thoughtfully and responsibly. That challenge sits at the heart of today’s Appvent entry.

The BBC Bitesize Guide to AI is a major new campaign designed to support young people to thrive in an AI world. I am genuinely proud to have been involved in this work as the lead education and AI consultant, helping shape a set of resources that put understanding, agency and confidence first.

AI Resource of the Day: BBC Bitesize Guide to AI

The BBC Bitesize Guide to AI is built around thirteen short films, supported by articles and interactive quizzes. These resources are designed specifically for 14 to 19 year olds and aim to demystify AI while showing how it is already shaping industries, careers and everyday life.

At the core of the collection are seven informative films that introduce essential AI concepts and uses. These cover areas such as wellbeing support, revision, art and intellectual property, social media transparency, prompt writing for text and image generation, and sustainability. Alongside these sit six inspiring interview features that explore how AI is impacting sectors including music, conservation, wellness, fashion, gaming and sport.

The full collection is freely available to watch at bbc.co.uk/bitesizeguidetoai.

Educational Impact

What makes this resource particularly powerful is how well it responds to genuine concerns young people already have. A recent BBC Bitesize and 5 Live Teen Summit survey found that 30 percent of teenagers are worried about AI’s impact on areas such as careers, creativity and misinformation. Almost a quarter said they struggled to know where to learn about AI or how best to use it.

This campaign addresses that gap directly. It gives young people accurate, balanced information and helps them understand not just how AI tools work, but how to use them mindfully. The films and quizzes build confidence while encouraging critical thinking, reflection and informed decision making.

For schools, this supports a shift from reactive conversations about AI to proactive education. Pupils are supported to use the right tools for the right job, with a clear understanding of both benefits and limitations.

Practical Application

Teachers can use the BBC Bitesize Guide to AI flexibly across the curriculum.

In computing and digital literacy lessons, the films provide clear introductions to AI models, prompting and real-world applications. In PSHE and citizenship, they offer strong starting points for discussion about wellbeing, creativity, misinformation and ethics. In careers education, the interview features help broaden pupils’ understanding of how AI is reshaping industries and future pathways.

The interactive quizzes make the resources suitable for independent learning, homework tasks or flipped classroom approaches, while also reassuring you that key ideas are being embedded.

Considerations and Tips

Use the films as conversation starters rather than endpoints. Encourage pupils to connect what they see to their own experiences of AI in everyday life. Revisit the resources over time rather than treating them as a one-off, as AI literacy develops through repeated engagement.

It is worth being mindful that these films and resources are designed primarily for learners aged 14 to 19. That said, given how many pupils in Key Stage 2 are already encountering and using AI tools, they would not feel out of place in upper primary settings. My best advice would be to watch them first and make a professional judgement. You know your pupils and their context far better than anyone else. Used thoughtfully, they can spark valuable discussion and reflection.

The collection also works well for staff professional learning. Exploring the films together can help build shared understanding and confidence across teams.

Conclusion

The BBC Bitesize Guide to AI is a thoughtful, accessible and timely set of resources that supports young people to engage with AI confidently and critically. By combining clear explanations, real-world context and interactive learning, it helps schools move beyond surface-level discussions towards meaningful AI literacy.

I am incredibly proud to have contributed to this work, and I would strongly encourage schools to explore the full collection and make use of these free, high-quality resources.
